The Methodology

What Is Somatic Breathflow?

Somatic Breathflow is a research-backed methodology that allows you to reveal and release subconscious patterns of limitation through breathing, interweaving the physical, psychological, and transpersonal dimensions of the human experience. Through this approach, breathing in everyday situations is transformed into an instrument for Nervous System Regulation. Shaping the conversation between the body and the mind, Somatic Breathflow introduces a gateway to understanding the interconnected patterns that forge our thoughts, emotions, and physical states.

The Anatomy of Breathing

With Somatic Breathflow you will experience in first-person how the neuro-myo-fascia pathways that define your breathing gesture are connected to the visceral and subconscious processes of your nervous system. Our Montessori-inspired pedagogy is constantly updated with the latest research and clinical studies. Our original anatomy illustrations are an important key to our innovative method, as they allow you to guide your awareness to the right place in the body during the exercises. While each chapter corresponds to a unique somatic exploration of the body, the sequence of the chapters has been curated to create a deeper experience that illuminates not only your knowledge of anatomy, but also your understanding of yourself.

Original Movement Sequences

In this specialty course, you will discover a repertoire of movement exercises to journey below the threshold of ordinary physical awareness that you can practice completely on your own. Somatic Breathflow is very different from but also very complementary to Breathwork and Pranayama practices. Our protocols reveal the connections between the subconscious of the mind and the subconscious of the body allowing each person to discover and transform the hidden movement habits connected to their unique personal background, family history, or a specific topic that is important for them during the practice. Crucially, all of our protocols are designed to generate an experience of pleasure, relaxation, comfort, and profound safety.

The Psychology of Breathing

Somatic and emotional release of subconscious blockages can feel very liberating. However, it can become difficult to harness the insights revealed during the practice and understand their effects in our everyday life. Our method includes a flexible protocol based on Jungian psychotherapy and modern techniques from Cognitive Science to make sense of the somatic experience.  By combining embodied awareness with psychology, our exercises are designed to connect your personal storyline with information from synchronicity and the collective subconscious. Somatic Breathflow is a powerful tool to transform your profound intuition and gut instincts into actionable knowledge for your personal and professional life.

Andrea's wealth of knowledge and the passion for the material easily shines through. The information is detailed yet is presented in a way that is easily accessible. The online campus is the most complete and professional learning platform I have ever seen. The anatomical illustrations are not only beautiful but deepen the learning through the detail presented. Everything that you need to learn is broken down into bite-size chunks which makes it easy and manageable for students who want to immerse themselves in the material but also have busy lives. I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the online journal and feel this is an integral part of the learning process. Through this, I am not only expanding my physical self but connecting to the deeper parts of my subconscious and indeed, my soul.

The Somatic Breathflow Curriculum

Discover the Foundations of the Breathing Gesture

The Somatic Breathflow Specialty Course is designed for practitioners who aspire to become experts in exploring Nervous System Regulation through the act of breathing with depth and precision. Whether you are aiming to expand your professional toolkit as a Breathwork or Pranayama practitioner, or integrate advanced breathing techniques into other existing practices, this comprehensive specialty course will help you build a foundation of expertise that sets you apart. By mastering the intricate interplay of body, mind, and breath, you will be able to create a meaningful lasting impact in your career and in the lives you touch.

01 - Ribcage Flexibility. Breathflow Exercises that Liberate the Spine.

The ribcage is the most flexible and mobile bone structure in the body. Because of lifestyle habits and aging, it becomes more and more rigid which creates a problem for the transmission of forces through the trunk and the smooth operation of many systems in the body. The osteo-articular chain of the breathing gesture affects the correct functioning of the spine, from to the pelvis up to the skull. This is why our original Breathflow sequences for ribcage flexibility can help appease neck pain, headaches, and lumbar pain.

02 - Thoracic Inhalers. Stress Management through Breathflow.

Learning how to separate the inhale and exhale from the action of opening and closing the ribcage is the first step to liberating hidden patterns of anxiety that control the visceral fascia in the respiratory and digestive systems. Restoring freedom of movement in the deep muscles of mouth, tongue, chest, diaphragm, and belly augments our capacity for serenity, grounding, and compassion. Not being triggered by situations that usually generate stress is the first step in transforming automatic and subconscious behavior.

03 - Abs and Exhalers. The Forces and Volumes of Breathflow Kinetics.

There are four separate layers of abdominal muscles in the body. Each one has its own characteristics that include: the direction of the fibers, functional continuity with other muscles, specific areas of contractile tissue vs passive aponeurosis... Learning how to use each layer according to its own features allows us to nourish the deep tissue of the fascia and regulate the nervous system through subconscious and passive visceral processes that connect the pelvic floor to the throat through the diaphragm and ribcage.

04 - Limbs and Orientation in Space. Gravity and the Subconscious Body.

Somatic Breathflow exercises that tap into the subconscious of the body are tailored to each person's unique lifestyle and depend on how we orient our bodies in relation to the force of gravity in everyday life. Learning to reprogram primordial patterns, sometimes imprinted when we were babies, helps us release deeply hidden blockages in the mind. Maintaining a free breathing gesture while practicing generates a bigger space for thoughts and emotions, unlocking new opportunities to rewrite personal storylines.

05 - Breathflow and Pelvic Floor. Use Voice to Detect and Relieve Pressure.

The viscera and muscles in the pelvic floor need to be free to adapt to different situations in everyday life. Unfortunately, they are often compressed because of a hunched neck, wrong abdominal exercises, tight clothing items, or just simply because of stress. Learning how to manage different voice patterns through Breathflow exercises that connect the abs, pelvic floor, diaphragm, throat, and resonators will teach you how to spontaneously project visceral pressure upwards instead of downwards while talking, breathing, shouting, singing...

06 - Integrating New Trajectories of Breathflow in Everyday Life.

Accessing mental and emotional release as a consequence of movements in the body can be achieved with many techniques. Somatic Breathflow protocols go one step further and reprogram your neuro-myo-fascia pathways. In addition to fostering Somatic Awareness and somatic release, they introduce lasting change that continues beyond the duration of your sessions. Without thinking about it, you will naturally be able to adopt the liberating movement routines and use them spontaneously in your own life.

The IOAS integral, anatomy-based approach is contextual, relational, functional, and insightful beyond anything I have learnt before. I am able to explain clearly why we practice certain movements, and why they yield the expected results in the body and mind, in a language that is accessible to my students and empowering for all. Each session allows for a lucid connection to the subconscious which opens up a flow of new insight. From holding one-off workshops about a particular theme, like reducing anger or recovering from addiction, to full series of events focused on healing trauma, managing stress or working with grief, I feel that my potential as an IOAS practitioner is boundless. Here is a short quotation from a client just after experiencing a full protocol: 'I have never seen this side of myself before. I can’t thank you enough for this revelation’. I offer the highest recommendation for the Institute of Applied Somatics methods. You will not be disappointed in the delivery, the detail, and the impact these systems and protocols offer you and your clients. Any of the IOAS methods that you study will help you to change lives.

Explore how they are weaving these transformative protocols into their work, guiding others toward awareness, embodiment, and resilience.

Practicing the NSR protocols was so helpful and gave me more insight to the body/mind connection. It was very interesting for me to unlock parts of the subconscious mind through the somatic awareness exercises as I have never made those connections before.  The somatic intuition journeys were the perfect container to receive a lot of insightful downloads. It was very inspiring, and I immediately found out the importance of this work. It gave me more insight into myself which will help me in my everyday life.

Darci B.

I've been through so many programs over the years. One of my first ones was a therapist training that covered hypnotherapy and many other techniques, lasting over three years. Looking back, I now realize that nobody really taught me how to just be present for the experience itself. We learned a lot, but we didn’t focus on truly being there in the rawness of the moment. What we did in this course is pure gold because it’s all about being fully present with the experience. There’s plenty of theory to understand the foundations, but the focus truly was on the embodied practice. Thank you for that.

Kadri I.

I’ve been dealing with carpal tunnel in both hands for years. I had surgery on my right hand over 10 years ago but chose not to have surgery on my left hand. I wear a wrist splint at night to prevent numbness. When I practiced the rib cage exercise, and I was amazed by the results! For the first time in days, I didn’t feel any numbness in my hand, and there was no pain. I was honestly shocked at how quickly it worked. I wasn’t expecting such fast and powerful healing, but I’m so grateful for the relief. Thank you so much—this really helped me!
