Introduction

How We Approach Nervous System Regulation

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the profound effects of stress, trauma, and chronic tension on our physical and mental well-being, Nervous System Regulation has emerged as a pivotal practice for cultivating balance and resilience. Our approach is based on Somatics and is applicable independent of age, personal habits, cultural backgrounds, or lifestyles. We will teach you how your daily habits can create hidden limitations in your emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing, and we will offer you practical exercises to move beyond these hidden patterns, automatic reactions, and unwanted behavior.

To support this process, our approach follows a structured progression, guiding you through three essential steps:

Somatic Awareness

Becoming conscious of mechanisms in the body that lay below the threshold of your ordinary awareness is the central aspect of our approach. It allows to put the physical body at the center of the picture that includes your mind and relationships. Your Somatic Awareness becomes your inner compass and your tool for stress management as well as emotional resilience.

Somatic Intuition

Understanding how subconscious mechanisms in the body exchange information with subconscious processes of the mind reveals the cognitive aspect of our automatic behavior, emotional triggers, and hidden beliefs. Exploring these processes opens the possibility to release and reframe entrenched psychological patterns that have a profound impact on your life.

Somatic Psychology

Integrating Somatic Awareness and Intuition is the third pillar of our Neuro-Myo-Fascia Repatterning strategies. We create Nervous System Regulation from the body, but we also include the language of the rational mind. This stage is important to truly accept new Reality Models and start talking to ourselves and others from a place of power, resilience, abundance, and serenity.

What to Expect

Your Workshop Experience

Discover how anatomy, the nervous system, and emotional experience are deeply interconnected. Through three days of immersive activities, guided exercises, and practical exploration, you’ll learn the foundations of the Neuro-Myo-Fascial Paradigm, develop greater awareness of your body’s responses to emotions and everyday experiences, and explore techniques for nervous system regulation. Your journey continues with six months of unlimited access to our online campus, featuring exclusive anatomy illustrations, video tutorials, guided practices, and interactive resources to help you integrate your learning at your own pace and deepen your connection between body and mind.

Discover the Neuro-Myo-Fascia Paradigm in Clinical Anatomy

A quiet revolution has been shaping clinical practice and the study of anatomy in recent years. Moving from the localized study of anatomical structures to a more holistic and systemic view of movement and tissues as they interact and change together. Since their development as fascia membranes in the womb, all of our anatomical structures are impacted by interaction with the environment as well inner psychological patterns. This course will present you with the foundations of this research and give you practical exercises to explore on your own.

Reveal the Connections between Subconscious Body and Mind

As you explore the connection between your personal psycho-history, cognitive reflexes, and automatic behavior, you will also learn to recognize deep layers in your own physical body that react to emotions, places, people, and even ideas, memories... Practicing Nervous System Regulation exercises will allow you to release stress and anxiety associated with lifestyle habits and the frantic rhythms of everyday life. The exercises also open the opportunity to move beyond chronic and hidden patterns connecting your subconscious body to your subconscious mind.

Respect the Rhythms of your Body to Deepen your Practice

This exciting adventure into your own physical, emotional, mental, and transpersonal self starts with 3 days of live activities and continues with 6 months of continued growth using the exercises you will begin to explore during the in-person experience. Your program of studies includes access to our world-class online campus, where you will find video tutorials, more exercises, anatomy presentations, interactive journaling workbooks, and many other resources to continue the learning process at your own rhythm.

Access Exclusive Resources, Anatomy Drawings, Tutorials...

Our collection of original anatomy drawings is key to understanding the research and guiding your awareness during the exercises. These carefully crafted illustrations are made-to-order and are exclusive property of the Institute of Applied Somatics, and you will be able to download them and use them for your own projects! Featuring a comprehensive view of the body’s critical components involved in regulation, they bridge the gap between anatomical knowledge and practical application, allowing you to explore our NSR techniques with confidence and precision.

Malou Bouw

Malou Bouw is the founder of Nova Yoga, a boutique yoga studio in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. She has been teaching yoga for over 10 years and has developed a deep fascination with the connection between the body, mind, and consciousness. During her training at the Institute of Applied Somatics, she experienced firsthand how slowing down, cultivating somatic awareness and listening to the body's subtle signals can reveal deeply rooted patterns, expand perception, and open up new possibilities for change. Today, she integrates these practices into her work, creating a safe space for curiosity, exploration, and reconnection in which the body becomes a guide rather than something that needs to be controlled or fixed. She continues to inspire others to rediscover and trust the wisdom that has always been within them.

Check Out What Others Are Saying about Somatic Exercises for Nervous System Regulation

At the Institute of Applied Somatics, we have had the pleasure of working with people from all over the world. Here are a few words from previous students:

I loved the Nervous System Regulation Training. I found it provides a solid anatomical base, a big experiencial part, to feel the protocols and appreciate their effects on the mind-body system, and a wise and welcoming teacher. Andrea is a pearl, his knowledge and gentle manner are so special. I was looking for a breathwork training and I found many breathing techniques to help people, and myself, free their breath and regain a link to their intuition and subconscious mind: to ask for guidance, inspiration, and help, for everyday life tasks or big life changing decisions. Being a very active person I found most precious the "not-doing is an action" approach, and I started introducing Somatic Breathflow in almost all my Hatha yoga, Yoga Nidra, Mindfulness, and bodywork lessons. I highly recommend this training if you are looking for something to reconnect your body to your breathing and your soul to cultivate deep relaxation, softness and easiness in everyday life.

Margherita Mazzocchi
Pilates, Yoga, and Meditation teacher

Being a Yoga teacher, I had already studied and worked with anatomy, particularly the pelvic floor. This course went far beyond simply mapping the body from table to mat. The implementation of the exercises allowed me to deeply feel the implications of anatomical constructs and how they reshape our human experience. What made it truly engaging was how it connected not just to physical awareness but also to regulating the nervous system, offering a more holistic and transformative approach than I had anticipated. Now I have a new and effective tool at my disposal both as a practitioner and as a yoga teacher! The group dynamic created a unique space that allowed for both active participation and quiet reflection. It offered the freedom to engage through conversation or simply through presence, without the pressure to speak. It opened a window into understanding the profound impact these techniques have on others, offering deeper insights into how somatic work resonates on different levels for each individual. It added a richness to the learning experience, as observing and sharing within the group deepened my own understanding of the material and the experience itself. Overall, the somatic approach has significantly enhanced my abilities, both as a therapist and a teacher. It has deepened my attunement to the language clients use during the Rolfing sessions I impart, allowing me to connect more intuitively with their needs. Additionally, it has shifted the way I emphasize the importance of rest and stillness—particularly in the final resting pose, Shavasana, after a yoga practice.

Santiago Pinto
Yoga Teacher Trainer and Rolfing Therapist

I thought I knew anatomy well, considering my many years of experience within the health industry and working with massage and reflexology. Much to my surprise, during the training at the Institute of Applied Somatics the articulate use of images, 3d models, and somatic exercises, made me feel like I was truly seeing and understanding the anatomy for the 1st time. Andrea’s teaching style is designed to give as much information as you need to know to do the action, to allow the body to do just that. The results were always palpable in the exercises we did. We started to retain knowledge through physical experience rather than just through studying. Andrea and Allegra’s support throughout was phenomenal. By the 2nd day all the students felt so welcome that it almost just felt like going home rather than to a class. I think this beautiful environment made our learning experience feel magical and authentic. The IoAS somatic work has really opened up my heart space. With the power of the knowledge and the protocols learned, I have felt a true sense of freedom inside my body after years of feeling restricted and trapped. I also feel confident in being able to help other people understand that they can make life changing differences in the way they communicate with their bodies to allow for their hidden issues to be resolved.

Zära Rumsey
Reflexologist and Massage Therapist

The IoAS in person training was an incredible experience that I could not have imagined at all. I had no expectations when I arrived because I had never studied anything like this but what I experienced was magical and gigantic. I didn't know that we could access so much information through the body and somatic consciousness and that we could not only discover traumas and unheard information but also tune in to our wisdom and love. The dreamtime journey technique was incredibly magical to me. It was a great way to integrate everything that the body releases through an intuitive path but that continues to pass through the subconscious mind. Being able to share ideas, doubts, and experiences with other people in the group helped me a lot to integrate the information and obtain other points of view. Simply by listening to my classmates, many doubts were resolved or new ways of seeing something were born.

Paula Medina
Dancer

After months of hardly sleeping because of mood swings, a racing mind, anxiety, and insomnia, I was able to sleep through the night without interruption during the entire time of the training. It felt like a miracle. Just the benefit of sleeping well for the first time in months made the entire experience invaluable to me. Andrea answered everyone’s questions in a way that was comprehensive and yet humble. On the rare occasions when he didn’t have an answer, he would say that he would think about it, or look into it, and then get back to the group with his thoughts or information, which he did. His knowledge of psychology, anatomy, and somatics all seemed very comprehensive to me. Most importantly, he has the ability to take abstract concepts – or visualizations in the case of anatomy – and make the explanations simple and straight-forward. I found that the group-dynamics made the concept of synchronicity come alive. Many times, I heard other people in the workshop talking about something that I had just felt or experienced. Or even if I had not just gone through the same thing, often what was being discussed called back to something that had occurred or happened to me earlier in life. The way the group felt open and free to share often very personal things heightened my feeling that this really works because we were all quite different from one another and yet we were all benefiting from the same process.

Robert Strauss
Writer and Gardener

My experience exploring somatic awareness and the subconscious of the body was very eye opening. I was surprised and very interested to learn how activating dormant muscles within the body can influence our mental perspective. It opened up the world of the mind-body connection for me and allowed me to understand how freeing your muscles can free your mind. We were given lots of advice on how best to lead clients, and tips on what kind of language to use for the client to keep them open minded and curious throughout the session, allowing their body to give them the answers rather than relying on us (the practitioner). I really loved having the in-person group dynamics. I found it very helpful to have feedback in dreamtime discussions. When I couldn’t understand what my dream was trying to tell me, someone in the group would share their perspective and help me gain a greater insight. We were encouraged to ask questions and we were reassured that whatever our body brings up to the conscious is okay and allowed to be shared. For me, I felt it was a very safe place to allow my body to be vulnerable.
